Hello Friends,
Last night was Midsummer’s Eve, one of the three spirit nights of the year, when the veils are thin between the worlds. The other two are Beltane (May Day) and Samhain (Halloween). In the west, we call it the Summer Solstice and it is universally recognized in all cultures as an important turning point—it is the longest day of the year and for the next few weeks we will enjoy long summer nights. Sun energy is at its peak, the primal creative force of the Sun God and the Goddess in her manifestation as the Mother. The sacred ceremony known as hand fasting was performed at this time, where couples committed for a year and a day and if they remained compatible, they would marry.
This is why so many marriages were celebrated at this time in June and the tradition continues to this day.
The Celts celebrated Midsummer as the Great Marriage of The Lord and The Lady; the union of Heaven and Earth and the Yin and the Yang. It was called the Hieros Gamos in Greek. The ancient cultures enacted this rite with earthly priestesses and priests whose performance of this powerful union renewed the fertility of the land and connected the people to the divine Source.
Today it is a new moon in the first degree of Cancer, a powerful time to rededicate yourself to your personal well being. It is an opportunity to begin again in a new cycle on your journey towards growth. You can perform a ritual to enhance the Sacred Marriage within. You may also choose to renew your vows with your partner. Last night I had a powerful experience speaking new vows as I faced my husband and sacred partner, looking deeply into his eyes. I felt the shift.
So whether it be with yourself or a partner, honor the Sacred Marriage of this season.
Blessings, Linda
