Rejoice with Nature on May Day,
May Day is one of my favorite times because nature has truly come alive. The whole period of time is a juicy one because we can joyfully embrace the fertility of Mother Earth. There is growth and pollination everywhere that provides us with abundant harvests in the fall. The Maypole, symbolizing the phallic energy of the season, was festooned with ribbons; dancing around it celebrated the sacred power of sexuality. The May Basket is actually a symbol of the womb and the fertile union of male and female. The people celebrated sex, knowing it was essential for all life.
The Celtic name for this period is Beltane, which means bright or sacred fire. Great bonfires were lit; animals and fields were blessed in hopes for an abundant year. It began traditionally on the eve of May 1st and lasted throughout the next day. It was often celebrated with feasting, dancing, and merriment all the way through May 15th. Before it became taboo, Beltane was a time when lovers ran off to the fields and woods together to honor the Goddess with ecstatic lovemaking.

The ancient ones understood the deep connection we have with the land; Mother Earth is literally our provider. As the growing green consciousness movement develops and we support local farming and sustainable food sources, we are moving into a new and yet age old respect for the laws of the natural world.
We can honor that connection through our sexuality as a joyous expression of the life force energy, ecstatically bonding us with partners as well as with spirit. It is a natural extension of that deep link to Mother Earth. Before sex became a way to possess a female, it was understood as a mutual pleasuring, not as focused on a single act of intercourse but rather a dance of loving and creative energy. Celebrations of the connection to our Source included lovemaking because it allowed abundance to flow freely.
Whether you enjoy feeling the Kundalini rise through your body with a partner or solo, you are enacting an ancient rite that is deeply spiritual and also deeply earthy. Allow all your chakras from the root to the crown to replenish, bathe in the magnetic energy you generate, feel you oneness with all that is.
Happy Beltane,
Linda
