Hello friends and Green Fire Blessings to you,

Spring Equinox, also known as Eostre or Ostara, will be celebrated on March 20th this year in the Northern Hemisphere. It’s the seasonal moment to focus on the green and flowering landscape around us as well as the beauty reflected in the sun’s growing light. It is a time of new beginnings; the first day of spring is also the astrological New Year as well as the time when day and night are equal in length. In the Earth Honoring traditions, Spring Equinox is the time of the Green Fire. When I first heard the term, it was such an interesting concept that I began to pay attention to the energy of the plants any time I was outside. I remember sitting on a bench and focusing my awareness on the new and vital energy surging through plants. I felt the buds making ready to burst and the new shoots reaching up for the sun and I actually sensed the growth of plant life as a kind of electric charge.

What captures my attention right now is the knowledge that plants of all types are the only living things that can make their own food from the sun. Photosynthesis is a wondrous miracle and yet I didn’t truly appreciate this until I was in the Peruvian Rain Forest last May. One of my companions on that trip pointed out that these plant beings of the forest are fully aware of our presence; “the jungle loves you, it wants you to be here and it calls you.” When he said it, I felt the deep truth of his words. That night I experienced Ayahuasca, the spirit plant medicine of the Amazon and I became fully aware of the intelligence of the rain forest. The wisdom that that came to me was: “plants rule the Earth yet with a gentle and patient love.”

While we were in the Peruvian Amazon, my husband visited the “Mother Tree” of the region. When he returned, he said he felt very connected to Gaia: he said, “I really got a sense of the Divine Feminine. It was life changing.” The tree was enormous, 200 feet high and at least 15 feet in diameter. You could walk inside of her and she had a unique growth on one side that was the exact shape of a heart. The guides told him that she was the guardian of the entire section of old growth rain forest around the Tambopata River, one of the tributaries of the Amazon Basin.

Now I no longer take green growing things for granted. From the magnificent trees of the Sequoia National Park in California (some of the largest Sequoias are 3,200 years old and are 247 feel tall) to the smallest green shoots poking up from my garden, green fire is a powerful force. Watch what occurs to you during this major solar event as there is an entirely different feel right now. You may notice some metaphorical significance to what you feel or what you choose to do.

It is a time to plant seeds and start projects and to clean out old patterns in your life as a “spring cleaning” of unwanted habits. On a sunny day; you might want to meditate in your garden or sit with a favorite plant. Pay attention to the green fire energy within all vegetation and notice what is stirring in you, ready to burst forth and blossom.

Celebrate the Spring Equinox in all its natural glory.
