Greetings my friends,

Happy Samhain! The time period, between Oct. 31st and Nov. 2nd is one of the most widely celebrated traditions in all cultures. The harvest is complete and the land will lie fallow for the winter months with the seeds of new life deep underground. In the Celtic tradition it is called Samhain which means "summer's end," and it heralds the time of descent into darkness, going within, and honoring introspection. The ancient cultures knew that after the grain was harvested, new shoots would rise again in the early spring to bring new life. They understood death as a natural part of the cycle of birth, death and rebirth and embraced the lessons of death as a part of life.

In Mexico and some areas of Central and South America, Nov. 2nd is celebrated as the Day of the Dead. Families gather to honor their ancestors and loved ones at their gravesites. In many cultures it is believed that the veil between the seen and unseen worlds is the thinnest at this time and it is easier to connect with them. The idea of foretelling the future must have arisen from these vigils, when people looked to loved and trusted ancestors for advice in the coming year.

At this time, you may want to put out pictures of your loved ones and build a lovely altar space, decorated with flowers or seasonal leaves to honor them. You might also want to meditate, asking for guidance in some area of your life. Psychologically, these wise ones function very much like the archetype of the good psychotherapist who holds up a mirror for us to look into deeply. I imagine that our ancestor guides know us well; they understand our hopes and dreams. They are the wise ones who can see our chosen path, knowing who we are deep in our souls and they can show us that ultimately we create our own fate.

At Samhain we may see the truth: what the future will bring is based on the thoughts and actions we pursue now. You may want to ask for help with transitions you may be facing, or qualities you want to develop. Other questions you could ask might be: How can I increase my intuitive sense to guide me? What aspect of my shadow self do I want to bring into the light? What intentions do I want to set for the coming months?

I’m thrilled to announce the debut of two segments of an interview I did as part of the documentary film Petals: Journey into Self-Discovery. Please go to these links for YouTube and enjoy!
