Happy May Day my friends!
This whole period of time is a juicy one because it is a time to joyfully embrace the fertility of Mother Earth. There is growth and pollination everywhere that provides us with abundant harvests in the fall. The Maypole, symbolizing the phallic energy of the season, was festooned with ribbons; dancing around it celebrated the sacred power of sexuality. The May Basket is actually a symbol of the womb and the fertile union of male and female.
The Celtic name for this period is Beltane, which means bright or sacred fire. It began traditionally on the eve of May 1st and lasted throughout the next day. It was often celebrated with feasting, dancing, and merriment all the way through May 15th. Before it became taboo, Beltane was a time when lovers ran off to the fields and woods together to honor the Goddess with ecstatic lovemaking.
Millennia ago the Hieros Gamos or Sacred Marriage was enacted during Beltane. This ritual was a magical and sexual union between the High Priestess and her consort. The integration of sex and spirit revealed the deeper mysteries of sexuality and it was believed to facilitate the renewal of life and reveal the pathway to expanded consciousness.
I discovered a poem by Clare Dakin that perfectly captures the feeling of this season.
Let the birds take your clothes
Let the waves undo your holding back
Let the vines unravel your tired mind
And the Earth savor your sweat and tears.
Let the trees bathe in your breath
Let the meadows embrace you
Let the mountains and the bees remind you
Let the sky flood in and allow the clouds to guide you.
Let your undoing be as total
As your becoming is beautiful—
And when the living world has climbed inside
Enough for you to feel four legs, scales and wings.
May you finally know yourself alive as all things—
Indivisible and responsible
Reborn into wholeness
Natural, Sacred and Wild.
Please celebrate in whatever way you choose, and connect with this energy of Love.
May blessings to you, Linda
